Title: Pride

(S) cripture:
Genesis 11:1-9 (NLT2) At one time all the people of the world spoke the same language and used the same words. 2 As the people migrated to the east, they found a plain in the land of Babylonia and settled there. 3 They began saying to each other, “Let’s make bricks and harden them with fire.” (In this region bricks were used instead of stone, and tar was used for mortar.) 4 Then they said, “Come, let’s build a great city for ourselves with a tower that reaches into the sky. This will make us famous and keep us from being scattered all over the world.” 5 But the LORD came down to look at the city and the tower the people were building. 6 “Look!” he said. “The people are united, and they all speak the same language. After this, nothing they set out to do will be impossible for them! 7 Come, let’s go down and confuse the people with different languages. Then they won’t be able to understand each other.” 8 In that way, the LORD scattered them all over the world, and they stopped building the city. 9 That is why the city was called Babel, because that is where the LORD confused the people with different languages. In this way he scattered them all over the world.

(O) bservation:
The unity that came from having the same language brought about a pride and confidence in themselves and what they could accomplish. That proud spirit excluded the Lord. The Lord then confused their languages and that scattered them and stopped the building of the city and tower. Without the unity of language they would need to depend on the Lord for some things and their human pride was broken.

(A) pplication:
Whenever I think I can do or accomplish something on my own, I fall into this pride trap set for me by the evil one. This is not to say that there is nothing I can do or skills that I cannot learn and develop. It does mean that when I think I can do this on my own that I and in for a correction from the Lord. The Lord will not allow me to continue in my prideful way without addressing it. Today I want to be keenly aware of when in pride I attempt to do things. I will confess my sin of pride and ask the Lord to forgive me and lead me. I will also hone the skills he has given me so that I can be most effective for Him.

(P) rayer:
Lord, continue to work in my life and when pride rears its head make me aware so that I can confess and trust you. Fill me with the Holy Spirit and use me today as I trust you. Amen
