Title: The Difference A Phrase Makes

(S) cripture:
Romans 8:1 (KJV) There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Romans 8:1 (NASB) Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

(O) bservation:
The translators of the KJV included the phrase, “who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit,” that because of more and better manuscript evidence was not included in the NASB. That phrase is huge and changes the meaning. There is no condemnation for the Christian, period. There is no qualifying phrase that follows, no parenthetic phrase, no catch phrase. I do not know if a scribe copying this letter simply could not believe what he read and so inserted this phrase or whether it was part of an early church father’s preaching notes but what I do know is that it is not part of the best of the New Testament manuscripts. My relationship with God is not dependent on my performance it is dependent on God and his Word. This does not mean that I am free to live in sin. Paul says, “May it never be!” My relationship with God is always in his hands and secure in his character. I am to live as his child free from the burden and slavery to sin and alive to new life that is empowered by the Holy Spirit.

(A) pplication:
What a freeing statement. I do not need to be looking over my shoulder wondering what God is going to do to me. I do not need to wonder about whether I am in or out of heaven. God does not condemn his children. He continues to discipline us when we are wrong or on a wayward path much like we do our own children but that is out of love for us. I need God’s discipline in order to become the person he wants me to be. His condemnation would crush my spirit and render me useless in his kingdom. To know that he does not condemn me allows me to live fully trusting him. Many of us have experienced that “long pointing finger” and the frown and words of condemnation and know what it does to us. This is the Good News. God does not act like that. He loves us and wants the best for us. Now that is a life worth living. Today I will again rejoice in what it means to be God’s child. I will thank him for his love and care and strength and power and discipline in my life. Today I will live free for Jesus.

(P) rayer:
Father I do not understand your ways at times. How could you not condemn me when I sin so often? Yet, you do not. You forgive and cleanse and empower me to be the person you called me to be. Let me live that way today and be a witness to your love and grace. Thank you for your word that encourages us to live for you. Amen

Title: My Obligation

(S) cripture:
Romans 1:14 (NASB) I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish.

(O) bservation:
Paul revealed his calling as an obligation to those who were not like him, Greeks and Barbarians and also to the wise and foolish. It is easy to share with those like us or with the wise but difficult to those unlike us and foolish.

(A) pplication:
It is easy for me to forget that my calling is also like Paul’s, to those unlike me and to both the wise and foolish. Who are the Greeks and Barbarians for me? There are people here in Huntington that I have very little in common with, some are rich or poor, others are crude or sophisticated, some educated or uneducated. I am called to all these. I am obligated to all these people because of what Jesus has done in my life. I operate better in some of these circles than I do in others, but I must share in all of them. I must intentionally put myself in places where I can be with those who do not yet follow Christ. I am obligated. Today I want to be more intentional in meeting those to whom I am obligated for the sake of Christ.

(P) rayer:
Lord, I thank you for the work you have done in my life and for the forgiveness I have received. Let me now share that with others. Help me to recognize the opportunities you bring to my life. Amen

Title: There Is More Than Rejoice, Pray and Giving Thanks

(S) cripture:
1 Thessalonians 5:14-18 (NASB) We urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone. 15 See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all people. 16 Rejoice always; 17 pray without ceasing; 18 in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

(O) bservation:
We are real familiar with verses 16-18, “Rejoice always, Pray without ceasing, In everything give thanks…” But we have neglected the verses that precede them. Verses 16-18 deal with me but verses 14-15 deal with how I treat others. It is interesting that we neglect our responsibility toward others and focus only on God’s blessings for ourselves.

(A) pplication:
On this Thanksgiving weekend when we have emphasized being thankful and given some thought to rejoicing and prayer, I must also focus on living out verses 14-15. I want to be mature enough in my walk with Jesus to know when to warn, encourage, help, and to be patient with those around me. I want to love them the way Jesus would and how Paul instructed. I want to live the way God expects his children to live. Today and in the days ahead I will look for opportunities to live out in a God honoring way the instructions of verses 14-15.

(P) rayer:
Lord, make me sensitive today to your leading. Let me treat others the way you would want in each situation. Let me live for you today. Amen

Title: Marching Orders

(S) cripture:
Matthew 28:18-20 (NASB) And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

(O) bservation:
This is commonly referred to as the “Great Commission.” Here Jesus gives the church and believers their marching orders for the future. The first order is to make disciples. Making disciples is to be our main focus in all we do.

(A) pplication:
As I live my life and serve a church I must ask, “What am I emphasizing in my ministry? What is the church emphasizing?” If it is something other than making disciples, then it is off track. Making disciples affects every area of our lives. It is not just about bringing people to Jesus although that is the place to start because that is the first commitment of a disciple. There are social and justice issues that are addressed when we live like Jesus did but those come as we mature in our faith walk with Jesus. As I think about the remaining years of my life and ministry, I must be sure that making disciples is the focus. I will intentionally make that the focus for my future.

(P) rayer:
Lord, as I look to life ahead for me and for the church let me lead by example in making disciples. Help me to lead people to faith in Jesus and then to growth in their new found faith. Grant me the wisdom I need to make this the focus of my life. Amen

Title: The Foundation of Thanksgiving

(S) cripture:
Matthew 27:50 (NASB) And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.

(O) bservation:
The reading today is about the last couple of days in Jesus life here on earth. He has been sentenced to die on a cross. He has been mocked and beaten. He has cried out to the Father in agony of spirit. In dying he willingly gave his life to pay for my sins. That is the foundation of thanksgiving.

(A) pplication:
Today is Thanksgiving and I can think of no better or more appropriate scripture to read for today than the passages about the Crucifixion. The price for my sin was death and Jesus paid that for me. I do not understand it, but I can experience it. Today as I celebrate Thanksgiving, I will be thankful for what Jesus did for me so many years ago. His sacrifice for us certainly is the foundation of Thanksgiving.

(P) rayer:
Lord, thank you for dying for my sins. Thank you for allowing me to celebrate this day some people I love. Thank you for your love and sacrifice for us. Amen

Title: Dirty Coffee Cups

(S) cripture:
Matthew 23:25-28 (NASB) “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence. 26 “You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that the outside of it may become clean also. 27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. 28 “So you, too, outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

(O) bservation:
Jesus challenged the Pharisees and teachers of the law, these are the religious leaders, for their proud and arrogant lifestyles. He challenges their hypocrisy by saying that they look good on the outside but are far from God on the inside.

(A) pplication:
Today I need to be sure what I say matches how I live. I do not want to be like the Pharisees. Too often though I find myself in their shoes, proclaiming one thing and living another. Encouraging people to this or that in their spiritual lives and not doing those things in mine. It is an easy trap to fall in. I want to be authentic in my faith and to live it out without hypocrisy.

(P) rayer:
Lord, let me get things straight today. I want my talk and walk to match and to reflect what You want me to be and do. Make me aware when I fall short. Make it clear to me so I can confess my sin and move forward with you. Thank you for your forgiveness and love. Let me walk with you. Amen

Title: Know Your Audience

(S) cripture:
Matthew 22:18 (NASB) But Jesus perceived their malice, and said, “Why are you testing Me, you hypocrites?

(O) bservation:
Jesus recognized his audience and understood their intent. John tells us, “He did not entrust himself to man because he knew what was in man.” The Pharisees were continually trying to trip Jesus up for their selfish purposes. Because Jesus knew their intent he never fell into their trap.

(A) pplication:
I need to give careful attention to the audience I am with. I need to study their hearts and determine their intent. Since I cannot see into their hearts, I must trust God’s Spirit to reveal to me what I need to know. Today I will follow God’s guidance so that I will not fall into the trap set by people who want me to fall or fail or to harm the Gospel of Jesus.

(P) rayer:
Lord, let me listen and hear your instruction and prompting in my heart today. Let me hear clearly the intent of the questions and conversations I have today. Amen

Title: Shut Up and Listen

(S) cripture:
Matthew 17:5 (NASB) While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice out of the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!”

(O) bservation:
Peter was in the middle of a mountaintop spiritual experience and was so enthralled that he began to tell Jesus what they should do. In that moment Peter thought he knew more and better than Jesus what should happen. God steps in and tells Peter to “Shut up! This is My Son, Listen to Him!!”

(A) pplication:
Too often I am like Peter. Today I will shut up and listen rather than telling the Lord what I should do. I want to listen and then do what the Lord tells me to do. I know that ministry happens at the bottom of the mountain and I cannot stay on the mountaintop. Lord, today I want to stay with you and do what you say.

(P) rayer:
Lord, teach me to shut up and listen. Amen

Title: A Solitary Place

(S) cripture:
Matthew 14:13 (NASB) Now when Jesus heard about John, He withdrew from there in a boat to a secluded place by Himself; and when the people heard of this, they followed Him on foot from the cities.

Matthew 14:13 (NIV) When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns.

(O) bservation:
When Jesus got the news of the death of John the Baptist he went to a private place. On hearing about the death of a friend, Jesus needed to be alone with His Father, so he went to a solitary place. The crowds would not leave him alone and followed by foot to where he went. Jesus then proceeded by boat and at least for that time he was alone.

(A) pplication:
So often when we hear bad news, we immediately seek our friends to be with. Jesus went first to His Father and so should we. Friends are necessary but there are times when we need to be alone with God. Howard Hendricks, a professor at Dallas Seminary, said, “You can never do enough for people if you are always surrounded by people.” Jesus knew that if he was going to be able to help the crowd, he first needed to be alone with His Father. That is why this quiet time is so important for me. It is my time with God that is not disturbed or interrupted by people. As God recharges my spirit, I can then help others. I have neglected this time with God from time to time. Today I renew my commitment to this time each day. I know I cannot adequately minister to people if I have not had this time with my Father.

(P) rayer:
Father, thank you for the reminder from the life of Jesus about the need for solitude and time with you. I commit to this time with you again today. Give me strength to follow through and teach me what I need to know to more fully follow You. Amen

Title: Heaven and Hell

(S) cripture:
Matthew 13:1-58 (NASB) That day Jesus went out of the house and was sitting by the sea. 2 And large crowds gathered to Him, so He got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd was standing on the beach. 3 And He spoke many things to them in parables, saying, “Behold, the sower went out to sow; 4 and as he sowed, some seeds fell beside the road, and the birds came and ate them up. 5 “Others fell on the rocky places, where they did not have much soil; and immediately they sprang up, because they had no depth of soil. 6 “But when the sun had risen, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. 7 “Others fell among the thorns, and the thorns came up and choked them out. 8 “And others fell on the good soil and *yielded a crop, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty. 9 “He who has ears, let him hear.” 10 And the disciples came and said to Him, “Why do You speak to them in parables?” 11 Jesus answered them, “To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been granted. 12 “For whoever has, to him more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has shall be taken away from him. 13 “Therefore I speak to them in parables; because while seeing they do not see, and while hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. 14 “In their case the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled, which says, ‘YOU WILL KEEP ON HEARING, BUT WILL NOT UNDERSTAND; YOU WILL KEEP ON SEEING, BUT WILL NOT PERCEIVE; 15 FOR THE HEART OF THIS PEOPLE HAS BECOME DULL, WITH THEIR EARS THEY SCARCELY HEAR, AND THEY HAVE CLOSED THEIR EYES, OTHERWISE THEY WOULD SEE WITH THEIR EYES, HEAR WITH THEIR EARS, AND UNDERSTAND WITH THEIR HEART AND RETURN, AND I WOULD HEAL THEM.’ 16 “But blessed are your eyes, because they see; and your ears, because they hear. 17 “For truly I say to you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it. 18 “Hear then the parable of the sower. 19 “When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is the one on whom seed was sown beside the road. 20 “The one on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, this is the man who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21 yet he has no firm root in himself, but is only temporary, and when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he falls away. 22 “And the one on whom seed was sown among the thorns, this is the man who hears the word, and the worry of the world and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. 23 “And the one on whom seed was sown on the good soil, this is the man who hears the word and understands it; who indeed bears fruit and brings forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty.” 24 Jesus resented another parable to them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 “But while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went away. 26 “But when the wheat sprouted and bore grain, then the tares became evident also. 27 “The slaves of the landowner came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?’ 28 “And he said to them, ‘An enemy has done this!’ The slaves *said to him, ‘Do you want us, then, to go and gather them up?’ 29 “But he *said, ‘No; for while you are gathering up the tares, you may uproot the wheat with them. 30 ‘Allow both to grow together until the harvest; and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather up the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them up; but gather the wheat into my barn.”‘” 31 He presented another parable to them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field; 32 and this is smaller than all other seeds, but when it is full grown, it is larger than the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that THE BIRDS OF THE AIR come and NEST IN ITS BRANCHES.” 33 He spoke another parable to them, “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three pecks of flour until it was all leavened.” 34 All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables, and He did not speak to them without a parable. 35 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: “I WILL OPEN MY MOUTH IN PARABLES; I WILL UTTER THINGS HIDDEN SINCE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD.” 36 Then He left the crowds and went into the house. And His disciples came to Him and said, “Explain to us the parable of the tares of the field.” 37 And He said, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man, 38 and the field is the world; and as for the good seed, these are the sons of the kingdom; and the tares are the sons of the evil one; 39 and the enemy who sowed them is the devil, and the harvest is the end of the age; and the reapers are angels. 40 “So just as the tares are gathered up and burned with fire, so shall it be at the end of the age. 41 “The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness, 42 and will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43 “Then THE RIGHTEOUS WILL SHINE FORTH AS THE SUN in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear. 44 “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. 45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, 46 and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it. 47 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet cast into the sea, and gathering fish of every kind; 48 and when it was filled, they drew it up on the beach; and they sat down and gathered the good fish into containers, but the bad they threw away. 49 “So it will be at the end of the age; the angels will come forth and take out the wicked from among the righteous, 50 and will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 51 “Have you understood all these things?” They *said to Him, “Yes.” 52 And Jesus said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like a head of a household, who brings out of his treasure things new and old.” 53 When Jesus had finished these parables, He departed from there. 54 He came to His hometown and began teaching them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers? 55 “Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary, and His brothers, James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? 56 “And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” 57 And they took offense at Him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household.” 58 And He did not do many miracles there because of their unbelief.

(O) bservation:
I am struck by how pointed Jesus was with the people when he spoke about heaven and hell. He was blunt and honest. He gave several parables, and the explanations were essentially the same. His angels would separate the righteous from the unrighteous, the good from the evil. The evil will be cast into the fire (hell) and the good or righteous would be with him in heaven.

(A) pplication:
If Jesus was this pointed and direct, I should be too. Today and in the future, I want to talk about the things Jesus talked about and emphasize the things He emphasized. I do not want this to be from a mean or arrogant spirit but out of genuine love for those headed for destruction.

(P) rayer:
Lord, give me courage to speak the truth about heaven and hell. Let me be direct and loving as I show people the way to heaven through faith in your Son. Amen
