Title: Fleeces
(S) cripture:
Judges 6:36-40 (NASB77) Then Gideon said to God, ” If Thou wilt deliver Israel through me, as Thou hast spoken, 37 behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece only, and it is dry on all the ground, then I will know that Thou wilt deliver Israel through me, as Thou hast spoken.” 38 And it was so. When he arose early the next morning and squeezed the fleece, he drained the dew from the fleece, a bowl full of water. 39 Then Gideon said to God, ” Do not let Thine anger burn against me that I may speak once more; please let me make a test once more with the fleece, let it now be dry only on the fleece, and let there be dew on all the ground.” 40 And God did so that night; for it was dry only on the fleece, and dew was on all the ground.
(O) bservation:
Gideon is asking God to prove that it was Him commanding Gideon to go into battle. He asks God not to be angry with him when he asks for a second sign of assurance.
(A) pplication:
Discerning if God is the One speaking to you is always a tricky task. So often we have false or counterfeit voices claiming to be God telling us to do what we want to do and justifying ourselves with those voices. How do we know. God’s voice will always square with scripture and will never be contrary to it. As I read, study and know the scripture those false and counterfeit voices will become more and more evident. I have wondered if the fleece is a sign of faith or doubt. My strong suspicion is it is a sign of doubt because we are asking God to “prove” himself. Today I want to be so in tune with the Word that any contrary voice will be evident and God’s voice will be clear.
(P) rayer:
Lord, I want to know You and your word so well that any false, counterfeit or contrary voice will be clearly evident to me. I want to listen and obey only You. Amen
