Title: Got Salt?

(S) cripture:
Mark 9:50 (NASB77) “Salt is good; but if the salt becomes unsalty, with what will you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”

(O) bservation:
Jesus often referred to salt in his teaching. In the scriptures salt has at least these three qualities:
    1. It was a sign of God’s Covenant (His promises and faithfulness to the people) in the Old Testament (Leviticus 2:13)
    2. Salt is a preservative that prevents decay in meat and was used as in illustration of counteracting the moral decay in the culture
    3. Salt makes a difference in the flavor of meat like God’s people are to make a difference in the flavor of the world around them
Jesus says we are to have salt in us and to also be at peace with each other.

(A) pplication:
Matthew quotes this as Jesus saying, “You are the salt of the earth…” (Matt. 5:13). Too often I find that I am not being salt and am useless to the Lord. It seems I expect someone else to be salt or for God to take care of things. Here, though, you tell me to, “Have salt in yourself.” I cannot escape this command to make a difference in the world around me for the kingdom of God. Salt is both a flavor enhancer and a preservative. Being salt means that I am too am to flavor and preserve Having salt in me will remind me of God’s faithfulness and of my responsibility to make a difference in the world. I must also work at preserving peace with my sisters and brothers.

(P) rayer:
Lord, let my life be filled with salt so I can make a difference for you and let me be at peace with my sisters and brothers. Amen
